Does A TV Antenna Work In The Attic?

When it comes to the location of a mounted antenna, there are usually two locations that people consider: indoors or outdoors. Indoors, the antenna can be mounted right on top of the TV stand. Outdoors, the antenna could be mounted on your balcony, on the side of the wall, or on your rooftop. Seldom do people realize that they have another option to consider: the attic.

The attic is not a very popular place to mount the antenna. Perhaps the biggest factor for the attic not being a popular place is interference. The interference that the antenna can encounter can be a result of several factors. The factor that proves to be the most detrimental in the antenna's performance is the building material that the roof is comprised of. The roof in a home is mostly composed of wood, but metal siding, aluminum ducts, and other metal parts are used in the roof's construction. All of these metal parts can greatly hinder an antenna's performance, causing interference, poor signal strength, and distorted images.

The fact alone that the antenna is indoors is another con against an attic installation. In most cases, the outdoor antenna will outperform the indoor kind because it has less interference. It is elevated higher and has a more clear line of sight to the signals emitting from the television transmission towers. While an indoor antenna can and has worked quite sufficiently, the fact remains that the outdoor antenna usually works better because of its larger surface area, higher elevation, and overall better performance.

Another negative is the fact that many antennas simply do not have much space. Many homes have attic spaces that are no more than a few feet high, and a complete antenna set up with its mast cannot fit in there. Sometimes, the attic may be so small that a person can't sit upright. If the space is too cramped, then it might be best to forgo an attic installation.

Despite these setbacks, many can testify to the success of an antenna mounted in the attic. Despite these setbacks, an antenna in the attic has worked with great success. While some antennas will show no interference at all, some antennas might need a little tweaking before it is configured properly. Because roofs may contain metal parts in it, the antenna must be placed in a location as far away from the metal parts without compromising the signal it picks up from the broadcast towers.

The best thing anyone can do is to give it a try. The results could be promisingly successful.
