It is a catastrophe when a home catches on fire and there is significant damage, but it is not always as bad as that. Sometimes even a small stove fire in your kitchen can cause a lot of grief because of the smoke damage it can do. If the fire burns plastics or there is grease involved, it can cause a lot of smoke with just a little fire. By the time you see it is happening and get it put out, nothing much at all might even be burned, but smoke can be all throughout the house.
There is bound to be an abundance of smoke around the stove area. This can include the walls, cabinets, and other appliances nearby. It can leave a black, sooty coat of residue on anything that was close to the flames. The flames can also melt anything plastic that was close. This is just the damage that you will have in the kitchen.
The smoke that traveled throughout the rest of your home will make the entire place smell bad. Your furniture, your curtains, your carpeting, and even the clothes in closets can be left with the acrid smell of smoke in the fibers. It is important that you get as many windows and doors open as you can and use ceiling fans or other fans you might have to blow as much of the smoke out as quickly as you can. Even when the smoke has cleared there will still be a bad smell that can be hard to get rid of.
Sometimes when the smoke is thick enough, it can even get inside your electronics and can possibly cause problems with them. If you have anything that will not function correctly after a fire, it is likely better to have a repair person look at it. It might can be cleaned and then it could work fine. Trying to dismantle it yourself could forfeit any warranty or home insurance that you might have on it.
Speaking of your home insurance, of course, you need to contact them and report the damage even if you did not have to cal the fire department. You could still have damages that might need to cover such as a new stove, cleaning, deodorizing, painting, or repairs to cabinets and other things. If there is no major damage, you might well be able to handle it without making an insurance claim if the cleaning and deodorizing is minimal and nothing was destroyed.
