Almost all home owners take pride in the outside appearance of their house. Some people spend hundreds to thousands of dollars a year for plants, improvements, yard maintenance, and equipment. Whether they pay someone to do it for them or if they enjoy doing it themselves, it can be a big chore even to keep small yard spaces looking nice. Besides keeping the lawns and plants well maintained, there is the home itself to be cared for. Everything from washing windows to keeping the paint looking good has to be attended to from time to time.
After five or ten years, the paint, siding, and brick on a home can become nasty looking. Residue from the rain and other pollutants can often leave stains on the exterior of the home. On some types of metal siding the water can eventually cause rust spots if it is not running off of the roof through the gutters properly. It is so important that you keep your gutters in good condition and working properly so that water can not gather too near the foundation of your home and cause it too sink or seep water under the crawlspace or into the basement. Many homeowners are replacing there old open gutters with new ones that are closed in in order to keep clogging debris out. The water can drain into them, but leaves, twigs, and animals can not get in.
Some exterior materials on a home can be cleaned using a power washer. This can be tricky job because power washers are exactly what they imply, powerful. The water stream can be adjusted to a force that is proper for the material you are cleaning. Obviously it will require more water pressure to clean stone or brick than you might use on flexible metal siding or paint. If you have never used a pressure washer, you might want to get instructions from the place you rent one from or follow the instructions carefully if you purchase your own.
If you do not pay a landscaper to maintain your yard, then it will be up to you to make sure that your property is draining properly. One of the leading causes of foundational damage to a home is because water can settle at the base of the house instead of draining away from the home. When it sits there for long periods of time it can cause the cracks in the cement blocks or cause the mortar to deteriorate and water can get in that way. This kind of standing water can end up costing thousands of dollars to have the damage it can cause repaired. If it continues long enough it can even effect the interior of your home as well.
