Whether it is a souvenir from a foreign place, a present from a relative, or even a relic from our childhood years, people have a tendency to keep their belongings even after they no longer need or use them. Some people are able to part with old belongings better, and they will donate their old clothes and old unused items to the Salvation Army or a thrift store so that others might find use of them. Then there are others who will pack all of their extra belongings into boxes and put them away in their closet, garage, or wherever they can squeeze them.
When the amount becomes excessive and storing it in your home is no longer an option, you will need to either build or rent out a storage unit. You could also donate, give away to family, friends, and neighbors, or throw out all of these things, but it can be difficult to part with these items, especially when they are of sentimental value. So whether you decide to store your belongings in a rented storage unit or a shed that you built or bought for your home, there are some things you need to do to ensure your items are safe.
When storing your items in storage units, there are two threats you will encounter. The first is the threat of rodents and insects. Before you put your items inside, spray the perimeter and the entrance with an insect spray and place roach bait near the entrance of the storage unit. Any insects that do enter will be lured in by the bait and will probably die before they can start to lay eggs and infest your belongings. If your items should become infested, then you need to remove everything and fumigate the whole unit. Then you will need to investigate all of your belongings for any that may have found their home in them.
Packing your items properly will ensure they will not be damaged by water or mold. Never, ever use cardboard because it is made of an organic material that mold will certainly grow on if the right conditions are present. Always use plastic bins that have an airtight seal to keep out any water. All of your big furniture, such as tables, sofas, or hardware tools, need to be wrapped in a double plastic bag and sealed tightly. It is important to keep the moisture out, and putting your stuff in airtight containers will ensure that your items will be safe from that.
