Why You Don't Want to Hire Someone Who Reads the Newspaper

If you are looking for new employees and are only using newspapers to do so, then you are not getting the best and the brightest of today's working world. If you're like most people, this information is probably surprising to you, but it is important that you are aware of it so that you can take the steps to attract more qualified employees.

When you post a job or help wanted ad in a newspaper, you are only reaching a very small audience - those individuals who subscribe to that particular newspaper. You might think the solution to this is to simply send your ad to several different newspapers. However, the problem is not really with how wide of an audience you are reaching but with the type of audience you are reaching. When you place an ad in the paper, you reach a very particular type of person - a type of person who is not ideal for today's job market. This may sound unfair, but take just a moment to listen to and consider the reasoning behind this statement.

Someone who is still reading the newspaper is, undoubtedly, not up to date on the latest happenings in the world. Sure, they might be well aware of things that are going on in the world, but they are not active participants in the world around them. This is evidenced by the fact that they are still opting to waste time, money, and paper by subscribing to a newspaper rather than simply going online, as most of the world is doing.

This also can be a clue into certain other undesirable traits of the potential job seeker. It is more likely that an applicant who still subscribes to the paper is older and potentially not tech savvy or able to use the latest business related technology, somewhat narrow minded and stuck in his or her ways, and holds old fashioned thought patterns or beliefs.

While this is not true for every single person who reads the newspaper, it is a very likely possibility. What a person does, after all, says a lot about him or her. When you post job ads online and get responses, you have the benefit of knowing you are getting applicants who know how to use a computer, type effectively, read and spell and use grammar correctly, and who are quick thinkers able to do online research easily. For these reasons, posting online is a great way of recruiting in itself. Without ever conducting an interview or talking to the applicant in person, you will be able to assess whether or not he or she possesses certain technological and research skills that may be necessary in the position you are seeking. Additionally, recruiting online is simply easier, less time consuming, and opens your position up to a much wider range of individuals. For these reasons, you should be sure that the next job ad you post is an online ad.
